2000 Masters Lacrosse tournament

You know, it must be a sign of getting older but it sure seems that the Masters tournament comes a lot sooner every year. Here we are in beautiful downtown Port Coquitlam for the 2000 Masters Lacrosse tournament and as usual Dave (the Comish) and the Tri Cities club put on a great weekend.

The New West club entered two teams this year, the guys that can play were in the "B" division and the rest of us (over 45 and the new players) entered in the new Sportsman division. I have to state at this point that the "B" team was totally awesome this year. Every game they played had the fans up and yelling and really having a good time.( Well it might have been the beer garden). I want to thank Rusty and Rick Wills for coming out to play for New West, hope to see them next year. Also we had Derrick Thornhill and Cal Briscoe out fot the first time. All these guys fit in really well to help New West play some great lacrosse. The only question is; What happened to #10 on Sunday morning? Will we ever know?

The 'C' team had a good tournament, with every player getting involved in the scoring. This year, we again had a few new players, Jack Loftus, Rod Smyl and Tom Brown all played well for first year players. We also had the best goalie in the 'C' division, in Harry Preston, too bad we forgot to give him defensive support.

Both teams got to play in the finals on Sunday, Sapperton took on North Shore in a good old fashioned lacrosse style game, lots of cuts and bruises for both teams but shaking hands at the end. Sapperton won 9 - 2.
The C team took on South Fraser in the final but ran out of steam, getting beat 6 - 4.
I added the stats for both teams, look on the box page.

The field year for 2000/01 started in Aug. with us dividing the field players into two teams. (There are now 7 teams in the Masters field lacrosse division.) We grew again this year as we added Jim Atcheson, Bob and Brian Tasker, Dan Wilson, Dave Storosmenko, Tom Stevens, Vern and Lance Baker. We also added a few new players to the game, Mike McIntosh, Cal Corbett, Rod Smyl. We got the core people out during the year when the rain was coming down and we got the rest out when the weather was good enough for our fair weathered players to surface.

I thought the year end tournament in April/01 went really well with both the New West teams finishing in the top three. New West Red took home the silver, while New West White took the bronze. No telling where we would have wound up had it not been for the great coaching job from Randy or did we end up higher because he was injured and couldn't play. Well, I guess we'll never know.
